Seigaiha (Wave)

Origin
Derived from an ancient gagaku (court music) dance called "Seigaiha" performed in the Tang dynasty style. The dancers' costumes featured this wave pattern.
History
Introduced to Japan from China during the Asuka period (538–710) through cultural exchange. Originally a costume pattern for court dance, it gradually spread to everyday textiles, ceramics, and lacquerware throughout the Edo period.
Symbolism
Represents peaceful waves and the wish for a calm, undisturbed life. The overlapping circles suggest infinite ocean waves, symbolizing power, resilience, and good fortune.
Modern Use
One of the most internationally recognized wagara patterns. Used in branding, product packaging, ceramics, and digital backgrounds. Popular in both Japanese and Western design contexts.
