Asanoha (Hemp Leaf)
A geometric pattern based on hemp leaves, symbolizing growth and good health. Traditionally used on children's clothing.
Origin
Based on the leaf of the hemp plant (asa), which was one of Japan's most important crops. The geometric pattern abstracts the leaf's six-pointed star structure.
History
Dating back to the Heian period (794–1185), this pattern was commonly used on children's clothing because hemp grows quickly and straight. Parents dressed their children in asanoha patterns as a prayer for healthy, rapid growth.
Symbolism
Represents robust growth, good health, and protection from evil. The hemp plant's strong, straight growth made it a symbol of resilience and vitality.
Modern Use
Popular in contemporary fashion, textile design, and anime (notably the kimono of Nezuko in Demon Slayer). Used in packaging, stationery, and digital design.
